The Roman church is comprised of Jewish and Gentile believers. Paul is concerned that some expect they can rely on the law to find righteousness. Maybe they are even demanding law-abiding behavior among their Gentile counterparts. Is it as bad as the circumcision controversy in Galatia? Maybe. But when you claim righteousness based on your own behavior and you fail to behave, it gives God a bad name. Hypocrisy is a broken witness.
