Jesus executes this same pattern of breaking into belonging over and over again. Look at the story of Simon Peter. At first, Simon Peter wants to resist Jesus. Go away from me Lord. But Jesus persistently pushes into Simon Peter’s life. Then Simon Peter finds a new community among old friends, a new purpose, a new mission, a new way of being in the world rather than the one he knew in the past. He is still a fisherman, but now he is a fisherman for Jesus. The pattern is Isolation and Need – Fear and Vulnerability – Interruption by Jesus – New Community. This is Jesus’ solution to our longing to belong. Jesus breaks through our shields and barriers to bring us what we truly need—belonging.
