Passage: Philippians 3:7-14

Preacher: Tim McConnell

Series: Give Thanks

Category: New Testament

Just the other day it was said again, as I was sitting bedside with a friend who was near to death, and we agreed, “I just can’t imagine going through this without Jesus and without eternal life to look forward to.” You’d be trying to squeeze every ounce of life out of every minute, like blood from a stone. With Jesus, the best is always yet to come. We have eternal life set before us as an inheritance that cannot be removed (1 Peter 1:3–5). Do you give thanks for eternal life, and for a life of purpose right now?

Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians from a prison cell, and yet we often refer to it as Paul’s letter of joy. How can that match up? It comes down to gratitude. It is one of the most reliable emotion adaptors—when we give thanks, we feel better. The more we learn to give thanks in all circumstances, the more we experience joy in the Lord.
