Today is the day. First Pres is 149 and entering its 150th year of ministry. August 17, 1872, a church was organized in the presbytery with eight members on the rolls, five women and three men. God has been faithful to sustain this ministry ever since.
If you happened to miss the Vision Weekend extravaganza, you will want to catch up on some news. Wow, did we have a time! We celebrated Jim DeJarnette retiring after 39 years of faithful ministry, then roped him in for another few months. Jim will keep on with us until the arrival of his successor on November 28, including pouring his leadership into Christmas Joy 2021 on December 12.
But not to bury the headline: we have launched the First Pres 150th Birthday Project to include a restore and refresh of our beautiful Sanctuary, the construction of a new space for community called The Commons, and the outdoor installation of our treasured Embracing Jesus sculpture. The total cost for this project is $3.8 million. The good news is that through careful planning by our Trustees, generous lead gifts by members of our congregation and personal commitments by pastors and elders, we are already 40% funded. We still have a long way to go. Please pray, prepare a gift and give sacrificially to this next faithful step forward.
This Sunday, we launch Belong, an 11-week series on finding true community and belonging in Christ and in the church. Loneliness is an epidemic. We all long to Belong. We want to challenge you to take this series on with commitment. What would it look like to commit to being in worship or seriously worshiping at home for every single week from now until October 31?
Visit my.firstprescos.org/subscribe to receive messages like this one by email each Tuesday, along with links to First Pres news.
Belong is our new sermon series that starts August 22. Be on the lookout in the next week for a mailed Scripture bookmark to follow along daily with the series. We all long to Belong. We want to challenge you to take this series on with commitment. What would it look like to commit to being in worship or seriously worshiping at home for every single week from now until October 31?
Growing Together Wednesdays offers a unique opportunity to affirm how God is calling us into biblical community. And there are many opportunities. What is God inviting you into? In the middle of our busy week, come together in fellowship and celebration, building relationships and community at GTW.
Mark your calendar for the Family Ministries Picnic from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on August 25! You'll see old friends and make some new ones. Be at the Weber Street Lawn for an evening of food, games and laughter. All families are invited!
