Conversation Matters

Posted by Tim McConnell on

It’s amazing what a conversation can do. I’m always moved by what can happen as people talk. Simple words—listening and responding—and God can do incredible things.

I wonder what conversations you remember in your life as the most meaningful. Maybe there was a conversation that began a lasting friendship. On Valentine’s Day, you might remember a conversation that became a romance that became a marriage that became a family! A few words back and forth began to connect hearts for life. A number of people are entering Life Groups from now through Easter to start conversations about trying to follow Jesus. What conversations changed your life?

Some conversations have eternal consequences. Jesus’ ministry was full of conversations. The Gospels are accounts of one conversation after another. Yes, there were miracles. Yes, there were times when Jesus spoke to large crowds. But it was through the simple back-and-forth of Jesus talking with individual people that the Kingdom was built.

We begin a series this week encouraging meaningful conversations. There are still etiquette experts out there saying polite dinner conversation avoids the taboo topics: money, politics and religion. But if we love one another we will want to talk about what matters most. We will want to share what we know of the love of Jesus in our lives. How do we do it?

During the series Really? Untruths Uncovered, we hope to give you some tools to answer tough questions about the Christian faith. But even more than that, we hope to give you encouragement to get into a few meaningful conversations and see what God has in store. Each week you will receive reminder cards in worship with some questions to prompt conversation about God. I’m praying for courage for all of us to wade into some deep talks between now and Easter.

Of all the conversations I’ve had, the ones that stick out the most are the ones God used to reveal Himself. I remember the conversations my Young Life leaders had with me as a teen that led me to give my life to Christ. I remember the (too few) times I’ve had conversations with kids and with some adults that led to their prayer to receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. A few words. Listening and responding. Boldly sharing about Jesus, and God does eternal things. Let’s keep the talk going.

"They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them." – Luke 24:14-15
